shoveling snow
Each year over 11,500 injuries are the results of shoveling snow. Guess what?
Heart accounts for only 7 %!

American Journal of Emergency Medicine reported in a study spanning 17 years were:
55% - Soft tissue injuries,
16% - Lacerations,
7%   - Fractures,
7%   - Cardiac related injuries.

34%  of the time the lower back was injured, seems logical and 16% were hand injuries followed by 15% relating to the head.
Muscle injuries that were acute due to exertion amounted to 54%, the nasty slip and falls were 20% and 15% of injuries were due to the snow shovel itself hitting someone inadvertently. So, shovel alone?

Of the 7% cardiac related injuries, 50% of those required hospitalization and cardiac was responsible for 100% of the deaths that occurred with shoveling snow.

Here's a goody!
We are 4.25 times ... get that ... over 4 times as likely
to develop heart symptoms if over 55 years of age!!

So be careful and shovel in moderation. The cold temps add fuel to hearts workload. If you are not used to excercise ........ take it EASY.

Now, here are some Think-About-it before shoveling.

* Warm up with light exercise before you start.
* Make sure to pace yourself by taking frequent breaks for rest.
* The best way to clear snow is by pushing it instead of lifting.
* Ergonomically designed shovels are a great choice to reduce the need for bending and heavy lifting.
* When possible, avoid large shoveling jobs by clearing snow several times throughout the day.
* Remember to wear warm clothing, including a hat, gloves and slip-resistant, high-traction footwear.

You know, about 15% of the snow related injuries are kids and adolecents under the age of 19. And, 66% of those were head injuries. Kids will be kids can result in snow shoveling accidents.

Just remember, THINK!
